Jonathan Harshman moved to Kentuck and then to Ohio in 1805. He did not want to live in a slave state. He built a cabin, brought his wife to join him, and set up a copper still to make whiskey. In 1814, he opened a business, Rench and Stanley. Jonathan was a political Federalist and, later, a Whig. He represented Montogemry County in the 24th Ohio General Assembly. In 1845, he became the president of the Dayton Bank.
