Thomas Johnson III

Thomas Johnson, III, was elected Governor of Maryland on 13 Febraury 1777 during the Revolutionary War. He was a delegate to the first Continental Congress in 1774. He nominated George Washington for commander-in-chief of the army. He voted for the Declaration of Independence, but did not sign it because he was called home due to a relative's illness.

In 1791 he was appointed by President Washington to the United States Supreme Court in 1791. Due to ill health he resigned from the court in 1793. Later, President Washington offered him the post of Secretary of State, but he declined.

He resided in Frederick County, Maryland most of his life. Thomas and Ann Jennings had 8 children.
