Individual Details
Philip Oswald
(Abt 1730 - 1799)
Philip Oswald bought a slave girl in 1774 from Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was about the time slavery was abolished in Pennsylvania. Philip brought Lett, the slave girl, to Maryland where slavery was still legal. Lett lived with the Philip Oswald family until 1799, when Philip died. Philip's son, John, kept her until John's death in 1812. John's heirs freed Lett at that time. Lett died at age 105 in 1868 in the alms house run by J. A. Barkdoll.
