Grafton Downs Senior

Grafton Downs worked as a principal of the Chewsville, Maryland school, the Fairplay, Maryland school, and the Downsville, Maryland schools. He also was a teacher at Trimmer's Business College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Grafton served as a clerk for the Washington County Commission, as chair of the Republican County Central Committee (1891-1893) and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Downsville Schools. He also headed the business department of the Hagerstown Herald. In 1899 he entered the merchantile business and served as a postmaster from the his store. He operated a general store in Downsville, Maryland in 1906.
Grafton Downs was a director of the Downsville and Hagerstown Turnpike Company. He was a promoter of the Downsville and Williamsport Turnpike. In addition, he was a director of the Planters' Mutual Insurance Company.
