John Cable was a farmer in the Ringgold District, Washington County, Maryland. He enlisted in 1864 in Company B of the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served under General George H. Thomas, Army of the Cumberland. John Cable was severly wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on 20 June 1864. After the army, he farmed in Ohio and, later, distilled and farmed in Washington County, Maryland. He also served as a director of the Hagerstown Bank and the Great Hagerstown Fair. He was Lutheran.
