Alexander Mack Senior
(27 Jul 1679 - 19 Feb 1735)
Alexander Mack, Sr. was the founder of the German Baptist Brethren sect that spawned the Church of the Brethren and other modern Brethren sects.
Alexander Mack was raised in Schriesheim, Germany, near Heidelberg. In 1706, fearing persecution for his beliefs, Mack and his family fled to Schwarzenau, Wittgenstein, Germany.
There, he and seven others established the congregation of "New Baptists" or "Schwarzenau Baptists" in August 1708.
In 1719, a congregation from Krefeld, Germany, emigrated to Germantown, Pennsylvania, under the leadership of Peter Becker.
In 1729, Mack and a large number of his followers came to Germantown and joined with the earlier Becker group, under the leadership of Mack.
