Joseph Criswell was a broom maker and gunsmith in Keedysville, Maryland. He also drove the stage from Boonsboro, Maryland to Shepherdstown, Virginia.
He and his wife, Elizabeth Kiger, were members of the Reformed Church. He was a deacon in the church. They had 12 children, but only 5 died before adulthood.
