Hans Tschantz
( - 1776)
Hans Tschantz was a bishop. He landed in Philadelphia on 3 September 1739 aboard the Robert & Alice. Hans hailed from Friedelsheim. Hans married in 1740 and farmed the land overlapping the Townships of Strasburg and Lampeter, and belonging to his new wife, Magdalena Neff. Also, in 1740 the couple donated land for the Tschantz Graveyard--the oldest know Mennonite cemetery in Lancaster County. Hans, as bishop, opposed the religious practice of foot washing.
In 1755, during the French and Indian War, Hans and other Mennonite leaders signed a letter to the Pennsylvania Assembly in support of the King, but declining to take up arms in the fight.
