John Hammer and Elizabeth Witmer lived in Springfield, Illinois from 1837 to1842, then they moved to Mount Morris, Illinois to farm land that Elizabeth's father had been given for service in the War of 1812. John Hammer's Saddle Store in Springfield, Illinois, was next door to Abraham Lincoln's law office--according to family stories.
John Hammer also saw the Native American Chief Blackhawk and Blackhawk's son when they were moved to Washington from Illinois. In 1842, about 80 of Blackhawk's tribe spent the winter in Rock River Valley.
