Milton Witmer bought his father's store at age 23 and ran it for almost 50 years, selling in 1902 to his son--D. J. Witmer. In retirement he ran his peach orchard farm with his son William H. Witmer. From 1852 to 1861 Milton served as postmaster. He was a Democrat. Presidents Johnson and Cleveland again appointed him postmaster. He also served two years as the voter registrar. He and Sarah Foltz, his first wife, were members of the Christian Church. His second wife, Mary Bachtel, was a member of the Reformed Church.
