Elie Wade owned a stone quarry and operated boats on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. About 1865 he bought the United States Hotel in Boonsboro, Maryland. The hotel was a change stable for the National Turnpike's stage drivers. Also, he owned the City Hotel in Sparpsburg, Maryland.
