Philip Boland was born "Philip De Vore Snyder." His mother, Marguerite Snyder, and father, John Boland, were not married to each other. At the age of two, Philip was adopted by Ben and Genevieve (Boland) Otto. His adopted mother was the sister of his real father. Growing up, Philip knew John Boland as his uncle and was not told that John was his real father until just before Philip entered the Navy. From his childhood through his Navy years, his name was Philip Otto, but upon discharge from the Navy, he changed his name to Philip Michael Boland.
