John Mutius Gaines Medical Doctor

John Gaines graduated from the University of Virginia in 1859 and from Jefferson Medical College in 1860. He soon became a military doctor for the Confederate States of America. He was captured twice during the civil war. The first time was at Boonsboro, Maryland after the Battle of South Mountain and Antietam. The second time was at Williamsburg, Maryland after the battle of Gettsburg, Pennsylvania. In both instances he remained with the soldiers at the field hospital. In December of 1863, John Gaines was exchanged for Union prisoners and set free.
