Jame Tice was commissioned on 27 November 1917 as a first lieutenant of the infantry at the Reserve Officers Training Center at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. In February of 1918, he joined the 311th Cavalry, United State Regular Army, and was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas. Later in 1918, James was promoted to Capitan, Personal Adjutant and Assistant to the Commandant of the School of Fire for Artillery Officers at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
