James B. McCoy

James McCoy came to Mount Morris in 1838. He built the first building within the present city limits of Mount Morris. It was the start of the Rock River Seminary and was called the "Old Sandstone." The building was demonished in 1893 to build a woman's dormitory.
The Illinois Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1839 selected the site offered by the Mount Morris area "Maryland Colony" for a seminary. The prarie mound was donated by local citizens.
The founding of the college was also the founding of the village of Mount Morris.
