Samuel Merritt Hitt
(22 Jan 1799 - 16 Nov 1859)
Samuel Hitt, along with Nathaniel Swingley, was the first to settle Mount Morris in 1836. They were leaders of the "Maryland Colony." He and Barbara Hershey had 12 children, but only six lived to adulthood.
