John Phelps was the first European to settle in the Mount Morris area--in 1833. Born in Virginia, his family moved to Tennesse in 1810. He joined the Army in 1812 and fought the British in New Orleans, Louisiana. He moved to Galena, Illinois in 1827. John Phelps wrote his biography.
