Charles Newcomer Senior

(22 Aug 1825 - 11 Aug 1907)

Charles Newcomer carried the title of "Major" in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Ogle County.

In 1849 he joined a ox train to the gold fields of California. Others with family ties on the journey were George and Michael Swingley, Samuel Cheney (Chaney) and Levi Rowland. They traded their oxen for horses and mules in Green River, Utah.

In 1850 Charles Newcomer and George Swingley returned to Mount Morris, Illinois via the Panama Ismus and New York. He took up farming. In 1853 he was appointed a deputy sheriff by Elias Baker. Upon Baker's death in 1855, Charles Newcomer became Sheriff. He was a Republican. He served at the Constitutional Convention of 1861. He was appointed paymaster for the Cumberland Army under the command of General Sherman. He served until the end of the war.

In 1857, Dr. Isaac Rice and he opened the Bank of Mount Morris. He continued to farm and bank until he sold the farm in 1875. Charles Newcomer was among the founders of the Rock River Seminary in Mount Morris.
