Individual Details

Catherine Funk

(24 Aug 1797 - 26 Dec 1900)

Catherine Funk, or Aunt Kitty, lived to 103. She had no children, but raised her husband's 12 kids. Catherine Funk came to Illinois in 1843 or 1845. After marrying Jacob Rice, she lived on his farm 3 mile north of Mount Morris. In 1890, twenty years after Jacob's death, Catherine moved from the farm into the town of Mount Morris.

To get to Illinois, Catherine and her family traveled by stage to Wheeling, Virginia. They then boarded a boat for the travel down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi River and the Illinois River to Peru. Finally, they trekked overland to Oregon, Illinois.

Catherine Funk took over the household chores early in life. Her mother, Maria Houser, was an invalid from rheumatism. Nonetheless, her childhood was said to have been enjoyable. The time was filled with "bees" where the kids prepared apples for apple butter. On Sundays, after church, the children would be quizzed by dad on the day's sermon. There was no Sunday school for kids, then. After completing their meal and their quizz, Sunday afternoon was a time of play. Until the deaths of both of her parents, Catherine cared for them and their home.
