Sylvester Funk attended three colleges in Ohio and Massachussets, and earned a doctor of philosophy degree. He assumed the presidency of Columbia College in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1904. Dr. Elmer Wolfe founded the college in 1888 as Wolf's Business College. He resided at 43 East Washington Street in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Harriet Fletcher listed Sylvester Funk's birth date as 5 June 1887, but this is two years after the death of his father, Samuel. Also, by the sequence of siblings listed by Harriet Fletcher and by Sylvester's wife's birth date, I believe the year should be 1877, not 1887.Endnotes
