Robert Reynolds Hitt Senior

Robert Hitt was a member of the US House of Representatives. He came to Mount Morris at age 3 with his family. He graduated from Asbury Academy in Greencastle, IN in 1855. He worked as a law and newspaper reporter in Chicago. Among other assignments, he covered the Lincoln-Douglas debates. He also toured Europe. Robert Hitt bought Rock River Seminary in 1873, and later sold it to Melchor Newcomer.
In 1874 President Grant appointed Hitt as the first secretary of the American Legation at Paris, France. President Garfield appoint him Assistant Secretary of State under Secretary Blaine. In 1882 he was elected as a Republican to the House of Representatives. He served in the House until his death in 1906.
