Daniel Shafer Rench

Daniel Shafer attended Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1837. In 1855 he moved to Sherpderdstown and opened a mercantile store. In addition, Daniel ran a grain boat on the Chesapeak & Ohio Canal and had an interest in a woolen factory.
Daniel Shafer was a justice of the peace for 40 years. He belonged to the Reformed Church of Hagerstown, Pennsylvania.
During the Civil War, Daniel Shafer, who sympathized with the Confederacy, was arrested several times by Union forces and had his store looted several times. At one point, he was imprisoned at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland.
