Individual Details
Francis Buchwalder
(Abt 1665 - Bef 20 Jul 1723)
Francis Buchwalder bought 650 acres on the west side of the Skoolkill River in Chester County on 12 November 1720. The Black Rock Sanctuary preserves 119 acres of this land. His homestead is still lived in by a descendant.
When Francis came to America is unclear. He may have emigrated to Philadelphia from Liverpool, England aboard the John Cappel Laurel, landing in Philadelphia in August 1720, and reported 1 September 1720 in the American Weekly Mercury. However, one of his sons, Joseph Buckwalter, probably arrived in 1717, and it is possible that Francis came with Joseph.
Francis was a Quaker, according to one source, and a Swiss national, according to another source.
