Peter I. Angle Senior

(22 Apr 1754 - 21 Feb 1821)

The Angle name is also spelled "Angel," "Angli" and "Angles." It means "dwelling in the nook or outlaying spot. The name originated in the Angelin area of Germany, east of the Elbe River, between Selswick and Flensburg. In the 5th century some emigrated to England and into Portou, France.
In 1681 the British King, Charles II, paid a debt to William Penn's father by granting Penn senior 40,000 square miles of land in America: Pennsylvania. Penn invited Germans from Rhinelanders-Palatinates to settle the new land. Having suffered through the Thirty Years War in the early part of the 17th Century, and still suffering persecution from local nobles, many accepted Penn's invitation.
Germantown, Pennsylvania was founded in 1683. Distrust by the English speaking population led to a 1727 law requiring each new emigrant to take an oath of allegiance to Britain.
Peter Angle served in the Revolutionary Army. Upon his discharge in 1782 he received 153 acres of land in Franklin County, Virginia. His and his wife's tombstone reads, "The first Angles to settle on Virginia soil."
