John Neff, Jr. was a doctor. A leading doctor in the Shenandoah Valley, he publicly denounced "purging cures" (vomiting after eating). Apparently, purging cures were used to rid folks of many ailments. The theory being that something bad was inside, and getting rid of it would help.
