Hans Burkholder, Sr. may have been born 25 September 1670 in Oberdiessbach, Bern, Switzerland. He became a naturalized British citizen 14 February 1729/1730. On 2 May 1729, Hans bought 200 acres in Strasburg Township, and sold the same to his son, Hans, Jr., 29 May 1733. Hans, Sr. was ordained a bishop by 1717 in the Conestoga/New Danville congregation. With the spelling of his name, "Hans Burgholtzer," he signed the 1725 The Christian Confession of Faith of the .... Mennonists.
