Hudson Veteran Receives Dutch Honors
Hudson resident James E. Staberg of 707 Pine St. N, was recently given high honors in recognition and appreciation for the role his 36th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Troop C, had in the liberation of the Netherlands 40 years ago during World War II.
Staberg was one of 40 U.S. veterans who were guests of Netherland's Dutch-American Friendship Society from May 1-9. He was the only veteran there representing the Midwest.
"Their appreciation is unbelievable, but they are extremely grateful that we helped them be free again after living under the Nazis for five years," Staberg noted.
The nine days in the Netherlands were full of receptions, banquets, ceremonies and celebrations for the veterans. ... [excerpted from a longer article telling more about the trip]

This photograph was taken when James E. Staberg was home on leave, after basic training, for his 1943 graduation from Hudson High School. Staberg entered the service in March of that year and served in Europe starting in October of 1944.
