Charlotte Louise (Newton) McDowell, 71, of Seattle, Wash., and a former resident of Hudson, died of lung cancer in Seattle last month, according to nformation received here. She was the daughter of Dr. James Elmer and Lottie (Mitchell) Newton and was a graduate of Hudson High School in 1940. Her father, a prominent Hudson physician for many years, was mayor of the city of Hudson for 16 years from 1934 to 1950. In 1947 she was married to Jack William McDowell. For a number of years she was employed by Boeing in Seattle. Preceding her in death were her father in 1961, her mother in 1975 and a brother, George F. Newton, in 1963. Surviving are two chldren, Brenda Louise (McDowell) Kelly and Monty Alan McDowell.

Mrs. J. E. Newton, Civic Leader, Dies [Excerpts]
Mrs. J. E. Newton, 85, a civic leader and musican in Hudson for more than four decades, died June 4, after an illness of about a month. Charlotte Euretta Mitchell was born Feb. 4, 1890 in Richland Center, the daughter of George and laura (Dodge) Mitchel. She was married in Richland Center in 1913 to James Elmer Newton, MD, and in January 1917 they moved to Hudson where he practiced medicine. Her husband, a revered and beloved family physician, died in 1961. He had served as Hudson's mayor from 1934 to 1950. She was a member of the United Methodist church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte McDowell of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren; a niece, Mrs. Richard H. Stayberg (Helen Rosemary Porter) of Orange, California who her home with the Newton family; and a brother, George Mitchel of Washington, D.C. A son, George Frederick Newton died in 1963.
