John Hoyer has had the distinction of being selected to play first chair, solo cornetist in the 86th Division Band at Camp Howze, Texas. This will mean a change in military rating for John, but his father, A. S. Hoyer, is as yet uncertain just what the new title will be.

PFC John Alfred Hoyer, of Camp Howze, Texas, is expected to arrive in Hudson this week to spend a furlough with his father, A. S. Hoyer and sister, Mrs. Donald J. Engstrom (Mary Susan Hoyer).

Hoyer and Lonergan of Black Hawk Divison Are Home on Furlough
When the 86th "Black Hawk Division" returned to the United States, June 17 after combat service in the Suropen theatre of operaton, two Hudson soldiers were among that group. They were Pfc. David Lonergran, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Lonergan and Pfc. John A. Hoyer, 21, son of A.S. Hoyer. The 86th Division was the first full division to be returned home, as a complete unit.
Both the Hudson soldiers are now enjoying thirty day furloughs with their families, after which they will re-open their unit for further training and redeployment to the South Pacific theatre of action.
The 86th landed in France March 2, and fought in the Ruhr pocket and then joined Patton's 3rd Army fighting through Ingolstadt, Freising, Branau, southern Germany and then into Austria. When V-E Day brought the fighting to a stop, the 86th had 42 days of combat.service.
Pfc. Hoyer who joined the 86th in March of 1944 from the Air Corps, wears the Good Conduct, the American Defence ribbons and the European Theatre ribboon with two battle stars.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Carlson of North St. Paul announce the engagement of their daughter, Delores, to John Alfred Hoyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred S. Hoyer. The marriage will take place in June.
