Individual Details
Irven "Popeye" Saylor
(1922 - )
Irven was born on the ranch in 1922. After graduating from high school in 1940,
he worked on a ranch near Richland for a few months; then he went to Hardin
where he worked beets for a season. He then came home to help his father on
the ranch. By then, three of his brothers had enlisted in the service to
answer the call for World War II. In 1946, he was able to buy some ajoining
property that belonged to Dorr Burke and started ranching on his own.
Clara Shawver was born at the home ranch in 1930, the youngest child of George
and Clara Shawver. She finished grade school at Spring Creek and then
graduated from Garfield County High School in 1947.
Clara and Irven were married in December of 1947. They lived on the Burke
place until 1954 when they purchased the original Saylor holdings.
