Death
THE MONTICELLO EXPRESS…. June 5, 1924…...PAGE 5THE PASSING OF HARM RICKELS
Harm Rickels died at his home in Monticello last Friday morning at 11 o’clock. He had been afflicted with kidney and gall trouble for many years, but had recently been in fairly good health until a week ago, when he sustained a stroke of paralysis while doing some work about his home. The stroke affected his entire right side. His wife and children left nothing undone to make his condition easy, however, his illness continued, and after two hemorrhages he passed away on Friday. His sudden death is a shock to his family and many friends, who had seen him about town until a few days before his death.
The deceased was born in the town of Marx, Ostriesland, Germany, October 5, 1868, and was therefore 65 years, 7 months and 24 days old at the time of his death. He immigrated to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerd Rickels, at the age of eight years. The family home was made for a short time in Pennsylvania and thereafter in Jones County in and around Monticello. Mr. Rickels was confirmed in the Lutheran church April 12, 1874. During his early manhood, he worked upon various farms about Monticello. He was married to Miss Maria Catherine Henrichs, August 4, 1882. Following his marriage Mr. Rickels opened a store in Castle Grove Township and conducted the same for 17 years. In the year 1905, he closed the store and bought a farm, upon which he lived for 16 years. He retired from active farm labor in 1921, and purchased a home in Monticello, where he lived until his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Rickels became the parents of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy and one daughter, Margaret died in 1908. In addition to his wife, he is survived by the following children: John Rickels, William Rickels, Mrs. Philip Skelley of Castle Grove township, Henry Rickels, Fred Rickels, Mrs. Harm Julfs, Mrs. Chris Specht, of Anamosa; Mrs. George Poppe, of Langworthy, and Miss Martha Rickels of Monticello. There are 14 grandchildren who survive their grandfather.
Mr. Rickels was a hardworking man and attained success by surmounting many difficulties. For many years he was a member of the Castle Grove Lutheran church and held the office of deacon in that church for a long period of time. The funeral services were held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran church last Monday afternoon at one o’clock. They were conducted by Rev. S.M. Ide, the pastor of that church. Burial was had at the Prairie Hill cemetery in Castle Grove Township.
