Individual Details
Judith Holmes Prouty
(13 Aug 1833 - )
Judith Holmes Prouty Dickinson was a pretty extraordinary woman. She was the daughter of Pliny Prouty and Melissa Holmes. There were nine children in the family. The Prouty family was and are one of the most prominent families in Spencer, MA. I have over one hundred letters from Judith's brothers and sisters to other family members, detailing their lives and travels.
An old family story tells that she went alone to Washington DC after she had heard of Nathan's death and brought his body back to North Brookfield. I have discovered, however, that she signed for his personal effects the day after he died. Therefore, she had gone to Washington some time before that and was with him before he died. Nathan is buried in North Brookfield. --- Steve Dickinson, 12/6/02.
After Nathan's death, she sold the farm and purchased a house in August 1868 in North Brookfield, MA which is still standing. She raised her two boys by herself. I have a picture of her as an older woman with her adult son Charles and his wife -- she looks to have been very tall and stern.
