Wilke Zimmerman worked as carpenter
Wilke Zimmerman was born in Germany on Oct. 19, 1840. In 1864, he married Elise Hayen, daughter of Johann Hayen and Gretke Elise Oltmanns.
Wilke and Elise lived in Leerhafe, Germany, until 1870, when they came to America with their three little daughters, Katherina, who married Johann Stutt; Grace, who married Harm Helgens; and Wilhelmina, who married Henry Harms. Wilke bought and settled on an 80-acre farm 3 1 /2 miles south of Monticello.
After moving to America, they had five more children: John, who married Anna Helgens; Alma; Anna, who married Will Siebels; Mary, who married Gerd Toenjes; and Wilhelm, who married Frieda Husman.
Though he lived on a farm, Wilke was a skilled carpenter by trade, building houses, furniture and the steeple on the old Wayne Lutheran Church. Before he died on June 11, 1917, Wilke made a visit back to his homeland in Germany. He brought back for his 'granddaughters gold expansion bracelets and a gold ring.
After Wilke died, his son, John, bought the farm and took care of his horse, Fanny.
The home that Wilke built for himself is now owned and occupied by Lester and Vera Zimmerman.
