Individual Details
John Damon
(11 Nov 1621 - Bef 3 Oct 1676)
John Daman came to the Colony of Plymouth with his sister Hannah before 1633. They were very young and their mother's brother, William Gilson was their guardian. Uncle William Gilson's will dated 1639 left property to his nephew and niece. When William's wife died in 1649 John and Hannah became their uncle's sole heirs as he left no children. 'John and Hannah Daman are allowed by the Court to be lawful heirs of William Gillson, it being proved by diverse persons that Gillson had often said that he intended to make these (his sister's children) his heirs' (Colony Records, 1649). John succeeded to his uncle's residence in Kent street, the second lot from Satuit brook, (Edward Foster's being the first). John was one of the Conihassett partners, but since he inherited his uncle's estate on Kent street, he probably always lived there.
He married first Katherine Merritt in 1644 and they had six children. He became an influential man and was often employed in public affairs. He was repeatedly chosen a deputy to the General Court. His sons, John and Lieut. Zachary, were active in King Philip's War. His second marriage to Martha Howland of Plymouth in 1659 also produced six children. John died in 1677.
