Individual Details
Captain John Vertrees Jr.
(16 Feb 1779 - 16 Nov 1856)
In 1832 John and Nancy Vertrees, along with their children except Samuel and Rebecca, came to western Illinois and settled in what is now Brown County (then Schuyler). They lived in present Elkhorn township just north of the Pike county line. John and Nancy came up over the old Indian trail with Jacob Van Meter Chenoweth and James Hackley Chenoweth, all noted pioneers of Perry in western Illinois.
John was married to Nancy A. Haycraft 26 December 1799 in Hardin County, Kentucky. They stayed in Kentucky for several years and had the following children: Samuel; Rebecca; Joseph; Miles Hart; Amelia; Margaret; John E.; Jacob Sneed; Charles Morrison; Nancy; Thomas Warren; Daniel Haycraft; and Mary Ann. By about 1830, they had moved to Pike County, Illinois, settling near Perry. Several of their children married and lived in Morgan County, and their parents apparently joined them late in life.
