(from the memoirs of Pauline Craig Hughes)
"When Catherine Barfield died, the Taylor estate went to Catherine McColloh as the only surviving heir. Her husband, Lewis, disposed of his home in Samson County and went to Duplin County to live on the Taylor estate inherited by his wife. There all their children were born excepting the three oldest. Daughter Mary was born and lived there until thirteen years of age.
Some of the Rhodes family, thinking they had discovered a slight irregularity in the title of the estate, entered suit for possession, and after much litigation and the spending of a great amount of money, Lewis compromised with the Rhodes, they paying him $1000 in cash."

John 39 M Baptist Minister N.C.
The Winston Co., MS 1850 census has many of this family living near each other.
(Pg 328A) shows Lewis, 82 years old, and Catherine, age 76. Living with them was son, John, age 39 who was a Baptist Minister.
(The previous page, 327, line 10 and con't on pg 328, line 1) has their son Henry M. Barfield and Elizabeth (McLeod)'s family. At the bottom of pg 369B is Willis Nivis and wife Sarah (Barfield) and blended family. This is daughter Sarah who married Thorton Vaught in Marengo Co. AL 4 Nov 1826. Suggests that Thorton Vaught had died and Sarah had married Willis Nivis ...... there are both Nivis and "Vaut" children listed. Immediately on the following page (370, line 1) is the family of Jesse Barfield and Elizabeth (Brown). Line 14 begins with Mary (Barfield) "Craigg" and lists children.
