Mathewes, James ( d. 1766) Son-in-law of Benjamin Godin, brother -in - law of David Godin, Isaac Godin, and Thomas LLoyd.
James Mathewes of Charleston was the son of James (d. 1745) and Elizabeth Mathewes. According to the inventory of his estate, he was a small planter (12 slaves ) in St. Philips Parish. Mathewes was not very active politically. He was elected by St. John Colleton Parish to the Twenty-first Royal Assembly (1754 - 1757) but held no other public office. On 29 March, 1750, Mathewes married Charlotte Godin, daughter of Benjamin Godin and Marianne Mazyck. In late December 1766, James Mathewes died. In his will, he bequeathed most of his estate to his childless widow, requesting only that he be "interred in a plain cedar coffin with only my name and age on the Lid with brass Nails and Laid in the Vault with my father".
