Cyrenius Buchanan
(3 Dec 1819 - 9 Aug 1877)
Cyrenius Buchanan ( eldest child of Jeffrey Wilcox Buchanan ) was born Dec. 3, 1819 at Devol's Dam near Marietta, Ohio. He passed his boyhood days under the parental roof, employed in farm pursuits and received as good an education as the schools of those days afforded. He was a student of the Beverly College. He and his brother Walter cleared off a piece of land with timber on it in Athens Co., Ohio and farmed it and with money received from it he want to Beverly, Ohio and entered the office of Dr. John Reynolds and began the study of medicine. He took a course of lectures at Cleveland, Ohio, and completed his medical education at that place. He began practice at Lowell, Ohio and for many years was the leading physician of that village and the surrounding country. He won a wide reputation as a skilled Physician, not surpassed by any in those days. As a citizen he was the first to assist in any enterprise in also to relieve the distressed. He was respected by all who knew him. He was married June 29, 1847 to Lydia Sarah Ransom, daughter of Theopelus Ransom And Sarah Wright, born Oct 9, 1823. She heired 260 acres of land adjoining Lowell on the east which made them a very fine farm and was very fertile. They purchased a fine home in Lowell and was also the leading druggist of that place. He owned an interest in the woolen mill of Lowell, Ohio. His wife was afflicted with cancer of the breast which caused her death Oct 26, 1875. She was dutiful and affectionate wife and a kind mother. A few years prior to his death he moved to Harmer, Ohio. Before leaving Lowell he was afflicted with a tumor on his cheek and after doctoring for many years with the most skilled physicians that could be found it baffled all their attempts to cure and finally caused his death Aug 21, 1877. He was first buried in Harmer Cemetery by the side of his wife under the auspices of the Masonic Order of which he became a member at Beverly, Ohio and was afterwards a charter member of Lowell Lodge #436 at Lowell, Ohio. Later they were moved from Harmer Cemetery to Oak Grove Cemetery at Marietta, Ohio. They had four children, William Alexander, Charles Ransom, Sarah Rachel, Mindwell Sophia.
