A wedding of interest to her friends in Covelo is that of Imogene
Lovejoy to Sgt. John Saunders of the Army Air
Corps at the First Presbyterian Church in Burlingame, December 29. After
a short honeymoon in the bay district and
at Carmel, the groom will return to his duties in Japan where will join
him as soon as transportation is available.
She is a granddaughter of Mrs. George Ells and a niece of Russell
Ells of Willits.

A wedding of much interest to her friends in Covelo is that of Imogene Lovejoy and Sgt. H. J. Saunders which took place at the First Presbyterian church in Burlingame on December 29. After a short honeymoon in the bay area and at Carmel, Sgt. Saunders will return to his duties in Japan. His wife will join him as soon as she is allowed transportation.
Imogene Lovejoy was born in Covelo, her parents being Robert Lovejoy and the late Inez Ells Lovejoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Ells. Her mother passed away while she was very young and her grandparents tenderly reared her to womanhood. She trained for nursing during the late war and has followed that profession since.
Death
(Oct. 15, 1923 - Nov. 26, 2015) John, as he was known to his many friends was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and friend. He was born October 15, 1923 in Camden, New Jersey and grew up with his mother, grandparents, and sister, Frances. At 16, he started working in the shipyards and in 1941 he enlisted in the Army. He was deployed to Tinian during WWII and was stationed in Japan after the war. John returned to the states to marry Imogene Lovejoy, and they both returned to Japan. He served the remainder of his military career in the U.S. with the exception of one tour to Iceland. He retired from active duty in Burlington, VT after 23 years of service. John began his second career with Sacramento County, first as Assistant Personnel Director at the Sacramento County Medical Center and then as Personnel Director for the Sacramento County Library System. John was preceded in death by his first loving wife, Imogene (63 years) and his sister, Frances. He is survived by his second loving wife, Jane Herumin (4 years); three daughters Sally Saunders, Susan Hallen (Larry), and Linda Clark (Andrew); four grandchildren Brian Hallen, Kevin Hallen (Marissa), Andrew Clark III, and Ann Tompkins (Sean); two great grandchildren Taylor and Jordyn Tompkins. John enjoyed music, traveling, and gardening. He will be remembered as being strong in mind, body, and conviction. Those lucky enough to have met him won't soon forget him. He was a long time member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4991. Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. on 12-3-2015 at Lombard Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on 12-4-2015 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in North Highlands, CA. Interment with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery.Published in The Sacramento Bee on Dec. 2, 2015.
