Individual Details
Price DeWitt
(7 Feb 1798 - 12 Feb 1854)
These marriages from before and after 1820 in Kentucky do not seem to fit the census record which shows a Price and Peter P DeWit in Scott Co, Indiana during 1820. Though the 1850 census record in Scott Co, Indiana is for sure this Price's family, as the children's names match. So far no other census records for them during 1810 and 1820 have been found, but records show Price in Kentucky, through children's births (Angeline Oct 1820) and later land records. All the married sisters stayed in Kentucky. If the 1820 census record is these families, the mother Nancy died before 1820 as she is not listed. His father, Peter Price, passed away in 1841.
Records show that Price and Sarah owned a tract in LaRue Co., Kentucky in 1846. (Deed Book 1, p 213.) Lillian Hoover's history says they decided to leave Kentucky to new territory about 1846, though they probably didn't actually leave Kentucky until after March 1848, as Price signed an indenture (see below) with his sisters families on that date in Kentucky. Their son John had married Mary Jane Hawkins 26 Dec 1845 in Kentucky and didn't come with them. "Price and Sarah DeWitt decided that the Bluegrass country had fulfilled its early promises and migrated overland through the territory northwest of the Ohio, planning on to a spot in the Military Tract in western Illinois. After numerous delays and stopovers, the ox and horse drawn covered wagons arrived in Pike county for a short time. About 1849, the moved though Brown County and settled on a farm in Adams County north of the present Siloam Springs State Park. From this farm the DeWitts spread out to live and farm the virgin soil of Adams and Brown counties."
While the dates in the story are slightly off, the account follows the trek over the prairie lands. Their journey appears to have first led north, probably to Louisville, before crossing the border with Indiana. Price and Sarah DeWitt were in Scott County Indiana in 1850 which is due north from Louisville. The children listed with them in the census were Angeline, Clinton, Delance, Asenath, Lydia and William Price. From Scott County, they turned west which would take them across Indiana into Illinois. Adams County Illinois is on the banks of the Mississippi River with Brown County east of it. Pike County lies below Adams and Brown along their southern borders.
Price did not live long in his new home. He died in 1854 in Adams Co. Illinois. His wife, Sarah, lived until 1888 near her children's families in the McKee area of Adams County.

Nancy DeWitt was first married to a Benj. Masden. Her children by this marriage were: Taylor Masden (Marsden) and Nancy Masden. Her second marriage was to John Howsley(Housley). There is a family listed for John and Nancy. Why they are not mentioned as heirs of Peter P. DeWitt I have no clue. The Flanders listed are the children of Benjamin Flanders and Sallie DeWitt. The Alberts are the children of --- Alberts and Polly DeWitt. John H. DeWitt amd James H. DeWitt are I believe the children of Peter DeWitt and wife Olliph. According to Peter DeWitt's will probated Sept. 14, 1840. Estate bequeathed to wife Olliph DeWitt, youngest son John Henry DeWitt and unborn child.
The big questions are who is Peter DeWitt, des'c with wife Olliph and George Washington DeWitt to whom the Deed conveyed the land?
