Death
From Funeral CardAlta was born to Tom and Iris Hill in Ukiah, California. The family moved to Miranda, California when Alta was a young child an then to Covelo, California as a young teen where her parents built the Hotel Covelo and Buckhorn Bar.
As a teen Alta loved to ride her horse,Star, swim the Eel River, hike and play the piano. At age fifteen she began teaching piano, continuing to past the age of ninety. For many years she had as many as forty piano students each week. Every year she gave a Spring Ricital which was a huge social event in Covelo.
After graduating from Round Valley High School in 1931, Alta began nurses training at St Joseph's College of Nursing in San Franacisco, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1936.
On May 21, 1936 Alta married her High School sweetheart, Charles English in the Hotel Covelo. Three children were born; Thomas Charles, Penelope Iris (Helland),and Candace Leila (Edwards).
Alta was not only a wonderful mother to her own children, but to many neighborhood children as well. Her home was always full of children. She routinely filled her car with kids for a day of swimming at the Eel River or hiking to Big Rock and Little Rock.
Her knowledge as a nurse proved to be a great blessing to the community of Covelo. She gave many "hypos", rendered first aid to minor as well as , at times, major accident victims. Aftr the ambulance service was started in Covelo Alta would often ride with the patient to the hospital.
Alta was active for many years in the Assembly of God Church. She taught Sunday School and often played the piano for special occasions such as Easter an Christmas cantatas.
As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, piano teacher, nurse, Sunday School teacher and friend, Alta is greatly missed.
