Death
DEATH OF AN AGED MANEilke Eden, an aged and respected citizen of Wayne township, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Diedrich Dirks, last Saturday, November 26th. His death was caused by heart trouble. The funeral was held at Zion’s Lutheran church, last Tuesday. The services were conducted by Rev. M. Scherf, the pastor of the Castle Grove Lutheran church, in the absence of Rev. Willms who is ill at thee Anamosa hospital. Burial was had at Wayne Center cemetery.
Mr. Eden was born at Hilmerburg, Ostfriesland, Germany, February 22, 1830. He was married to Mrs. Margaret Schellstnezt in Ostfriesland, Germany, December 24, 1862. There were two children born to this union, John Eden and Mrs. Diedrich Dirks. Mrs. Eden died in Germany, March 1, 1891. Mr. Eden and his children emigrated to the United States and landed in this country, May 29, 1894. He settled in Wayne Township, where he has since lived. He was engaged in farming for a number of years and later made his home with his son, John. A short time ago when he became ill, he went to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Diedrich Dirks, where he died. In addition to his two children named above, Mr. Eden is survived by three step-children, Mrs. Ulrich Johnson, Mrs. Otto Otten and D. Dirks.
Mr. Eden at the time of his death was the oldest man living in Wayne Township. He was 91 years, 9 months, and 4 days of age when called to the Great Beyond. He was a good father, who will be long remembered by his children and stepchildren for his deeds of kindness. [The Monticello Express, December 1, 1921. p 5]
