Individual Details
Philip F. Jones
(Abt 1753 - Bef 1830)
Phillip Jones had married Nancy Webb in South Carolina. They had five sons and three daughter: Jesse, Phillip, Martin, John, James, Mary, Sarah, and a daughter that married George Woolsey. (from The Barrens... by Emery White)
Philip F. Jones was born about 1753 in Wales [LDS Compact Disc#18 Pin#314395]; died in Edmonson County, Kentucky. He married Nancy Webb about 1778. Nancy was the daughter of Martin Webb and sister to Merry Webb who married Mary Garrison after the death of her husband Mary Garrison is the mother of the wives of Martin and John Jones and widow of Salisbury Garrison of Pendleton District, South Carolina. (Whittaker)
Known dates:
1784,19 April - A deed was recorded in Washington County for 400 acres (grant #321) from Martin Webb and wife Judy of Wilkes County, North Carolina to Thomas Dillard (bro-in-law), the land recorded as being bounded by PHILLIP JONES (son-in-law), Benjamin Rees and John Webb. James Stuart was attorney for Martin Webb.
1790 - On Greenville District South Carolina census - Martin Webb family near neighbors
1796 Warren Co. Ky was formed from Logan Co.
1799, Aug. 9 - Kentucky, Warren Co. (now Edmonson ) south of G. River. Philip Jones was assigned a 200 ac. tract of land by John Phelps (Nancy Webb's brother. this is the wife of Martin Webb). Thomas Jones and Philip Jones were chain carriers for the surveyor. This land was on the south side of G. River someplace above Brownsville.
1801 Warren Co. KY. Charles Stice's will was proved by the oaths of William Phelps (this would be Nancy Webb's brother....her father was also named William) and Philip Jones.
1802 Oct - Warren Co. Marriage of Jesse Jones & Sally Rountree
1802 Nov 5, - Warren Co. A Philip Jones appointed a Simmons man power of attorney to recover slaves, etc. on his property, etc.; in Charlotte Co., Va. I'm wondering if we aren't dealing with two Philip Jones;' here. This don't sound like the one who came to Ed. Co.
1807 - Barren Co. - Marriage of Philip Jones Jr. & Judith Hazelip.
1810 - Grayson Co. was formed from Hardin and Ohio counties.
1812 Jul - Warren Co. Marriage of Martin Jones & Polly Garrison.
1812 Dec - Warren Co. Marriage of John Jones & Eleanor Garrison.
1820, Nov. 18 - Philip Jones, Sr. of Grayson Co. (this was actually the part that became Edmonson Co. in 1825, north of G. River) sold to Martin H. Webb this same tract of land on the south side of G. River. The calls, etc. are the same. (Philip's wife is not mentioned on the deed and that was required if a man had a wife which leads me to think she might have been dead. But in checking the 1820 Grayson Co. Census I find Philip Jones, Sr. age 45+ and a female about the same age. )
1825 - Edmonson Co. was formed from Grayson, Hart, & Warren.
1825 - Salsbury Garrison, is listed in the 1825 Edmonson County, Tax List.
Norman Warnell, an Edmonson Co. historian
wrote the following comments:
I cannot find anywhere that our Philip Jones was in the Revolutionary War. I can find numerous Philip Jones' but not ours, so I am doubting that he was a veteran of that war.
Another thing that has me puzzled on Philip's children. There was supposed to have been a daughter who married George Woolsey. Now, the only George Woolsey that I know of was the one who lived in Dilema Valley and his wife was a Hopkins, not a Jones. I'm beginning to believe that part of the Jones History is not correct.
