Charles Stockbridge

Charles Stockbridge. Born ca 1634 in England. Charles died in Scituate, MA on 28 Dec 1683; he was 49. Occupation: wheelwright, miller.
Inherited his father's water-mill at Scituate, house, ground and orchard. In 1665 he purchased George Russell's half of the mill. He also built the second water mill in the town of Plymouth in 1676. In 1673, he was allowed by the town '30 acres of land on the 3d. Herring brook, on condition that he erect a Corn-mill on that brook and keep and tend the mill fourteen years. That mill was built 1677.
1673 Plymouth Court Records. Att this Court, complaint was made by Isacke Chettenden, of Scittuate, that Joseph Turner, Senir, Thomas Turner, Daniell Turner, Jeremiah Hatch, William Hatch, Thomas Hatch, Charles Stockbridge, John Merrett, Joseph Woodward, Thomas Woodward, William Randall, and Richard Dwelley assembled together on the 14th day of May last, and did, contrary to law and in a roictus way, throw downe a fence or great psell of fence of the abovesaid Chettendens, by him sett up on land layed out to him by such as were by the authoritie of this govment therunto impowered.
The said psons being summoned to appear att this Court to answare the said, and theire defence being fully heard, it appeered evidently to the Court that theire said acte was done in a roietus way in regard of theire number, yett conceiucing that theire intent was to comit a treaspas onely, to bring the case to a tryall, doe therfore onely amerce them to pay a five shillings a peece to the use of the collonie (Shurtleff 127).
In 1659 when Charles was 25, he married Abigail, in Charlestown, MA.

The appraisal of the estate of Charles Stockbridge, deceased, which by settlement of his estate were to belong to Samuel and Benjamin Stockbridge, when the youngest son came of age, they rendering to their mother [now Abigail Turner] rent during her life time, was dated 1 August 1700.
