Death
Funeral services for Joseph C. Elston, 92-year old father of Coles County Clerk Elmer P. Elston and three Mattoon residents, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Clark funeral home in Charleston. Mr. Elston, a retired Illinois Central railroad employee, died Wednesday afternoon in Charleston hospital. Mr. Elston, who worked at the Illinois Central shops here before his retirement several years ago, had been a patient in the hospital two weeks. In addition to Elmer, he is survived by his four other sons, Victor, of Mattoon, and Clarence, John, and Ralph, all of Charleston. He also leaves four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hopper and Mrs. Helen Arnold, both of Mattoon, Mrs. Josie B oles, of Orlando, Fla., and Mrs. Lucy Bartimus, of Chicago; two brothers, Alonzo, of Ravenden, Ark., and Ernest, of Springfield. Mr. Elston was a member of the Modern Woodmen lodge and the Baptist church of Dundas. Rev. H. L. Hayes of Charleston will officiate at the funeral and burial will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery.Son of Lewis Price and Eliza Christman Elston. Married Martha Ellen Meadows October 14, 1882. To this union was born 13 children. Retired from Illinois Central Railroad. Member of Modern Woodmen and Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his wife, one daughter and three sons.
