Similar family stories claim a royal, wealthy background:
Christina Von Beesten claimed to be a descendant of the "House of Orange" (Heiken)
Steve Read said in an email, "When I lived in Denver in the early 80's I had a chance to visit several times with my Great Uncle, who was Johanna's (Christina's sister) grandson. He remembers what she said about the family in Germany, mainly that the von Bestens were wealthy at one time and they are related very distantly to the royal house of Germany, the Hohenzollerns. They lost everything in one of the many wars they had in Germany. Then he said, "She told me the family was from (whatever "from" means) a place which sounded like our city of Phoenix." He also had the von Besten coat of arms, which was brought over from Germany. I examined it, and it was genuine. ( I did not get a photo of it at the time, and have been trying to coax his daughter into sending me one - it's stored "somewhere in a box", now that Ralph's gone.) There were two bunches of grapes on the shield, and the motto was "aus der Schweiz", which means "from Switzerland". I wondered if the family made their money in wine, and I located a little town by the name of Founex in an area of Switzerland with vineyards - but it wasn't until I saw your research on Christina that I knew about Funnix. Very strange, isn't it? Both would be pronounced similar to Phoenix."
In Ralph's letter to me, he said "I can remember when I was about 8 or 9 that Johanna told me at one time her family the von Bestens were wealthy and they are related very distantly to the royal house of Germany the Hoenzollerans. They lost everything on one of the many wars they had in Germany." -- JoEllen Olsen
Apparently the von Beestens were aristocracy in Switzerland, but were kicked out of the country about the time of the French Revolution (fortunately with heads still attached). They then moved to Munich, Germany (Albright).
