Reminiscences Of A Vet
Hackley Recalls Heavy Frost on Field At Chickamauga
Mr. S. O. Hackley, a Confederate veteran while reminiscing yesterday recalled that on September 20, 1863, fifty-nine years ago there fell a frost so heavy that it killed the vegetation in Kentucky and Tennessee. On the same day, during the terrific fighting which took place during the second day of the battle of Chickamauga, Captain Gus Dedman and Oscar Hackley were mortally wounded.
Captain Dedman lived twelve hours after he was struck but never regained consciousness. Hackley died twenty days afterward from his wounds. S. O. Hackley and W. L. Routt received wounds from which they recovered.
