Death Claimed John H. Hayen At His Home Early MondayLast Monday morning, August 10, at 12:50, occurred the death of one of Monticello's oldest citizens, John Henry Hayen. He suffered the fracture, of one of his hips a month ago, and on Sunday, July 26, submitted to an operation for a strangulated hernla. He successfully passed through this ordeal, but infirmities of old age caused his passing.
Mr. Hayen had been a resident of Jones county since 1870. He was well and favorably known, and enjoyed a large circle of friends throughout his lifetime.
Born In Germany.
The birth of Mr. Hayen occurred October 23, 1851, at Moens, Ostfriesland, Germany. His parents were the late John Henry and Gesche (Oltmanns) Hayen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a consistent member of his church throughout his life.
In November, 1870, the subject of this sketch emigrated to the United States, and has therefore been a resident of Jones county for the past sixty-six years. He was married to Gesche Harms, December 20, 1877. Mrs. Hayen passed away March 28, 1923. Three years previous to this date—May, 1920—Mr. and Mrs. Hayen retired from their labors on a farm and bought a home in Monticello.
Eight Children.
Mr. and Mrs. Hayen became the parents of two sons and six daughters, all of whom survive their father. They are: John Hayen of Amber, Herman Hayen of Wayne township, Mrs. Meta Hedden, Mrs. Elise Tobiason, Mrs. Mary Thuman, Mrs. Alma Siebels, Mrs. Gesine Rieken and Mrs. Katherine Doden. He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and by two sisters, Mrs. Meta Behrends and Mrs. Mary Rieniets.
Funeral services were held yesterday morning, August 12, at 10 o'clock, at the family home in Monticello. Mr. Hayen's pastor. Rev. J, Willms, thereafter conducted further services at Zion Lutheran church in Wayne township. Burial was made at the cemetery adjoining the church.
