Services for Herman P. Egger, 90, were held Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Untied Church of Monticello, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, was in charge of arrangements.
Herman P. Egger died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitatiion Center following a brief illness.
Survivors include his wife, Louise; five daughters: Marlene (Alan) Meeker of Marion. Arlene (Richard) Hanssen and Phyllis Kiburz, both of Monticello, Rose (Dennis) Killinger of Tampa, Fla., Joyce (Scott) Hornstein of Huxley; a niece, Leona Smith of Stillwater, Minn.; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Jean; a brother, Alfred; and three sisters, Clara Egger, Olga Smith and Edna Borden.
Herman P. Egger was born Nov. 17, 1909, in Dubuque County, Iowa, northeast of Sand Springs, the son of John and Maria Schmocker Egger. He attended the rural schools in Delaware County. He later attended Iowa State University to become a certified milk tester. He then was employed as a milk tester in Clayton County.
On January 8, 1937, Herman Egger and Louis Eiben were married at SS Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. The couple farmed on the Egger family farm, northeast of Sand Springs. He was ahead of his time in promoting and practicing soil conservation. He retired from active farming in 1979 and moved to Monticello. He then started Egger Wood Products and sold fine hardwood lumber. He retired from the wood business in 1995.
Mr. Egger was a member of the United Church of Monticillo, where he served in various offices of the church council for over 30 years. He also served as a township trustee and on the county election committee.
A memorial fund has been established.
