Death
Obituary:"J.F. Barfield, a veteran of the Confederate army and a pioneer citizen of Van Zandt County, died last Friday night and was buried Sunday at Wesley Chapel. He had been in poor health for some time,
but the Herald has not been informed as to the immediate cause of bis death, which occurred at the home of his daughter in Tyler. Mr. Barfield was bom March 14, 1838. In 1880 or 1881 he married Miss Izora Ruff, who died April 15,1891, leaving one daughter, Mrs. C.G. Freeman of Tyler. On the 19th of December, 1901, Mr. Barfield married Mrs. Lyda Crisp, who survives him with one sister, Mrs. H.H. Holcomb of Lockeny and One brother, A.M. Barfield of Dustin, Okla. The deceased also leaves four granddaughters. During the Civil War Mr. Barfield was a member of the 17th Regiment Pat Claiborn Division, of the army of Tennessee. He took part in about all the battles fought by the Western Army. It was in 1851 that he came from Winston county, Miss., to Cherokee county, Texas, where he lived until in the fall of 1869 and then came to Van Zandt County. In addition to the bereaved relatives, there are many people now living at Wesley Chapel who remember Mr. Barfield with respect and affection. A goodly number of them were present at the funeral and anyone listening to the conversation at that time could hear many fine and earnest tributes to the character of the departed. One feels that an era of history is passing away with the passing of such men as this."....Canton Herald, January 4, 1918
News Article: "That old veteran and solid citizen, J.F. Barfield, was born in Mississippi in 1838, came to Texas in 1850 and has lived near Wise, this county, for forty-eight years.".... from the Wills Point Chronicle, August 24, 1905
